2025 Web Design Trends (Hot or Not)

2025 Web Design Trends (Hot or Not)

It’s that time of year when the world of web design is buzzing with fresh ideas and evolving aesthetics. Every year brings a wave of predictions – some stick around, while others fade as quickly as they arrived.

At Studio Illicit, we love a trend that drives creativity and improves user experience. But, let’s be honest – not every trend deserves a standing ovation. So, we’ve sifted through the noise to bring you the hottest (and not-so-hot) design trends for 2025.

More Use of AI – HOT

AI is revolutionising web design. From smarter chatbots to predictive UX that knows what users want before they do, AI is becoming a website’s secret weapon. Expect to see hyper-personalised content, AI-driven chat support, and intuitive design tweaks that respond in real-time to user behaviour.

Sustainable Web Design – HOT

Green design is no longer optional – it’s essential. From energy-efficient coding to eco-friendly hosting, sustainability is influencing how websites are built and maintained. Not only does this reduce your carbon footprint, but it also aligns your brand with growing consumer demand for ethical practices.

Parallax Scrolling – NOT (But With Caveats!)

Parallax scrolling has long been known for its ability to create depth, movement, and immersive storytelling experiences on websites. When done with subtlety, it can make a site feel fresh, interactive, and visually engaging. However, in 2025, simplicity and speed are top priorities. Parallax effects can impact page load times and disrupt navigation, so the key is moderation and purpose.

Full-Page Headers – NOT (But Not Gone)

Full-page headers once dominated web design, offering bold, eye-catching intros to websites. They’re still useful for portfolio sites, product showcases, and campaign landing pages where you want to make a big first impression. A striking image, video, or call-to-action can set the tone and draw users in. That said, modern users are more goal-oriented. They want fast access to information, not a scroll-heavy experience. As a result, full-page headers are being replaced with hero sections that introduce key content without taking up the entire screen. For many websites, a more streamlined approach is the way forward.

Playful Cursors – ON THE FENCE

We get it. A playful cursor can feel fresh and fun –  and it’s a creative flex for art and portfolio sites. But, accessibility takes a hit, and overdoing it can be a bit, well, gimmicky. When done with subtlety and intention, playful cursors can add charm. But if they interfere with navigation, it’s a no from us.

Custom Illustrations – HOT

Nothing says “unique” like custom illustrations. Stock images are out, and bespoke artwork is in. Illustrations bring personality to a website, boost brand storytelling, and are often more accessible than image-heavy photography. Plus, they can be designed with inclusivity in mind.

Anti Design / Brutalism – HOT

Love it or hate it, brutalism is making waves. This raw, rebellious style rejects “polished” design in favour of bold, unapologetic layouts. Think stark colour clashes, unpolished typography, and a “break the rules” energy. It’s not for every brand, but it’s certainly making its mark in creative industries and counterculture spaces.

Final Thoughts

2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year for web design. With sustainable practices, AR technology, and bespoke design leading the charge, the focus is firmly on smarter, sleeker, and more thoughtful user experiences. Meanwhile, we fear that playful cursors and oversized headers may struggle to keep their footing in the fast-evolving landscape.

If you’re looking to stay ahead of the curve, lean into trends that enhance performance, accessibility, and user engagement. From immersive storytelling to AI-driven personalisation and custom illustrations that pack a punch, the right design choices can make your website stand out for all the right reasons.
